At Trieste Next 2025, the talk “Inside the Drug — When the Shape of a Molecule Makes the Difference” attracted a full room and an actively participating audience, confirming strong interest in the molecular foundations of modern medicines.

The session featured Majed Chergui, Paola Storici, and Stephanie Federico, who guided the discussion through complementary perspectives spanning chemical physics, structural biology, and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Focusing on the role of molecular shape and chirality, the speakers showed how subtle structural differences can determine whether a compound becomes an effective drug, remains inactive, or leads to adverse effects. Examples from real medicines illustrated how drug–protein interactions depend on precise three-dimensional compatibility.

The high level of interaction during the Q&A reflected an audience with the scientific background needed to engage with complex concepts, enabling a meaningful exchange rather than a one-way presentation. This made the session particularly valuable as a moment of dialogue between researchers and a knowledgeable public.

By combining solid scientific content with clear communication, the talk demonstrated how fundamental research at the molecular scale directly underpins advances in drug development and therapeutic innovation.
